Customers Urged to Stay Vigilant as Scammers Attempt to Steal Personal Information
A new phishing scam is making the rounds, targeting customers of Manx Telecom with fake billing emails. Cybersecurity experts are warning that these fraudulent messages are not only deceptive in appearance but could lead to serious consequences such as loss of access to email and social media accounts.
According to a spokesperson from the Cyber Security Centre for the Isle of Man, a “large number of reports” have been received concerning emails that appear to be from Manx Telecom or manx.net. These emails typically instruct recipients to click a link to view a new bill, but the link is malicious and designed to harvest sensitive information like login credentials.
What Makes This Scam So Dangerous?
-
The emails are designed to look official, often including company logos.
-
Victims are urged to take “urgent action” to avoid account closures.
-
Once login details are stolen, scammers can:
-
Hijack email accounts
-
Send phishing emails from compromised addresses
-
Access linked platforms, including social media
-
This is a classic social engineering tactic: scammers create urgency to push victims into bypassing their better judgment.
How It’s Happening
The scam involves:
-
Fake emails asking users to “verify” their account
-
Clicking on a malicious link leads to a fake login page
-
If login credentials are entered, scammers gain unauthorized access
-
In many cases, this results in victims losing control of their email and social media accounts
Dozens of manx.net accounts have reportedly been compromised already.
How to Protect Yourself 🔐
The Cyber Security Centre and Manx Telecom urge users to follow these safety tips:
✅ Never click on suspicious or unexpected email links
✅ Do not provide personal information like passwords or email addresses
✅ Report suspicious emails directly to your telecom provider or local cyber agency
✅ Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on your email and social accounts
✅ Always verify requests via official websites or customer support
